Becoming a home-based medical billing specialist is one of the top paying medical jobs from home available today. Medical billing and coding specialists submit and follow up on claims sent to insurance companies by medical providers in order to receive payment for services they have rendered to their patients.
The same process is used for most insurance companies, whether privately-owned companies or government-owned. Medical billing specialists are encouraged, but not required by law to become certified by taking an exam such as the CMRS Exam, RHIA Exam and others. Certification schools are intended to provide a theoretical grounding for students entering the medical billing field, and certified specialists are compensated at a higher rate than non-certified billing specialists.
Hospitals generally use a significant number of medical billing specialists (41% overall) because of the constant flow of patients they see, with private practice physicians following closely behind.
Having one of the medical jobs from home such as a medical billing specialist requires the following things:
- Excellent listening and writing skills
- Good knowledge of common medical terms, short forms, definitions, and phrases (training available)
- Ability to interact with doctors on an as-needed basis
- PC with speakers and internet access, in a quiet work environment
